Cottenham Yesteryear Road Run

22nd April 2007

Last year's show report stated that the event would due well to beat the 2005 total of £8,400 but what little did I know? Despite the inclement weather in 2006, £9,500 was raised for MAGPAS and given the excellent weather this year, maybe it might be possible to crack the £10,000 mark? The number of people present on the green to welcome the vehicles back to Cottenham would lead you to think it's possible.

We got out of bed just a tad earlier this year so we were able to get out and about amongst the vehicles on arrival, as we've been caught before with many owners heading straight for home after the event. The commercial vehicle section was not quite as diverse as some previous years with no less than four Morris Commercials on display but there were one or two lorries I hadn't seen before to look at and record in pictures.

The car section, however, was quite diverse ranging from a 1912 Flanders to a 1978 Toyota Celica. A beautiful burgundy Aston Martin DB5 caught the eye, as did a 1951 Armstrong Siddeley Sports saloon and Jaguar C-type. 1970s classics were plentiful with a Singer Chamois (badge-engineered Hillman Imp Californian) and bright-orange NSU amongst the rarer examples. The fine weather had brought out many classic British sports cars including various MGs, Austin Healeys, Triumphs, Sunbeam and even a Ferrari.

The motorcycle section was also well supported with a good mix of both motorcycles and scooters taking part. There were only a few truly veteran machines but many from the decades spanning the 1950s to 1970s. Several modern classics also took part and a substantial number of riders also helped to marshal the event.

As always, the tractors supported the road run in admirable fashion with members of Cambridge Vintage Tractor Club and Cambridgeshire Young Farmers to the fore. Classic diesel machinery obviously comes in useful for a road run and there was also the odd Field Marshall to rock you around the 20-odd miles of the circuit. As usual, many tractors towed all sorts of trailers for their families to ride in or on a variety of seating arrangements.

The stationary engine section on Cottenham Green was a little smaller this year and the programme entries a little misleading, it appeared last year's list had gone to print! My Ruston PT, a John Deere, Wolseley WLB and the fearsomely noisy concrete mixer were nowhere to be seen, but you could see our Corbett's and Kenrick's corn mills, plus a vacuum pump milking machine, massive Bentall root cutter and various water pumps at work. The working element was rewarded at the end of the day when Dad's Wolseley WDII and bench grinder took the cup for Best Stationary Engine.
