The second year of the Thurlow & Haverhill Steam & Country Show on its new home of Horseheath Point-to-point racecourse just south of Cambridge was another successful show in our calendar. With much better access roadways and an amended layout, partly due to there being no major funfair, it seemed a much more spacious event than in 2005.
The vehicles were moved to the area vacated by the funfair, which allowed the tractors more room facing the stationary engines. The majority of the trade stands were arranged around all four sides of the parade ring and as a result, seemed very busy on the Sunday, which was the only day we could visit this year, due to birthday party commitments in North Norfolk on Saturday evening.
However, I do wonder if there was another similar event on elsewhere in the surrounding area as the number of cars in particular, and some particular trade stands I expected to see present, were absent. In addition there seemed quite a few gaps on the steam engine line when I visited them for the photos.
By some quirk of fate, both James & I had each booked in a Wolseley and where we ended up on Sunday, we were amongst four other similar engines. It wasn't all common verticals though as the Hercules, Tangye, Bamford, Richard Hornsby, Avon, Bradford, Galloway & Fairbanks Morse testify.
There was a nice selection of tractors with perhaps the outstanding item being the early 1920s Moline in working order. In addition, there were some well-restored tractors from the International stable and the Norfolk rusty standard Fordson men were in attendance. Allis Chalmers were also to the fore but a number of tractors were obviously not reliable as we saw at least three push or tow starts from our vantage point on the engine line-up.
All in all, it was a nice day out and we look forward to returning next year for the full weekend.
